Alyssa and Jenny
I suppose that when you
work with two women who
met on the Rugby field,
you should probably look up something about Rugby.
But I didn't.
So when they started the day with
my heart melted to hear Alyssa shouting
(Jenny would pass)
(Jenny would pass)
And then I realized
(feeling kind of stupid)
that it's what you shout
to your teammates
But then I melted again.
Because who the hell starts their wedding day
with Rugby drills in the hot sun?
The one whose wife is on the National Rugby team
with eyes up and a broken hip.
And the one who trusts her wife to help her
rebuild and rise.
So really, when you think about it, it's
to help you do your damndest to get to your dream and
when you're broken and
while you're healing and
when our lives are hard and
when others aren't and
also when they are and
whether you want me there or not, really.
laughing all day long
comparing writing assignments
(I'm not comparing! I'm just...well...)
steaming your wedding outfit
picking up tacos
walking up this hill in Boulder
in sandals not really meant for this
p - ass
past the sign that tells us the best way
to take on a mountain lion
(I guess we'll stand our ground and fight it off? Happy Wedding Day, Babe!)
and up to the summit
where our tiny cell phone speakers will
use all their might to
play a song that we picked,
and that will be enough.
Where the only witnesses are each other and
this magnificent valley and
some dead trees
And the only interruptions from a random mom that smiles
and says SHHHHHHH to the tinygiant voice of her piping child
as they shuffle by on their evening walk.
and this crazy-ass photographer we went and hired
who thinks she's a therapist
And all of that is still enough
to make Alyssa's eyes well up
and Jenny's expression shift into surprise at the sudden emotions
to meet her face
as she breaks into
was enough to get us here
is enough to begin the journey forward.
