Personal Advice - The Light is in You
It's been an exceptionally hard few years for anyone that isn't a white, straight Christian. This month, in particular, has been painful for the Queer community, as the United Methodist Church voted to ban gay clergy, and components of the Tr*mp military ban on transgender service members began to go into force. Sometimes, when I feel my chest tightening and fury rising in my throat, I like to look out at the mountains and remember that humans are small.
My beliefs include divinity, in a rather complex form (I'm Hindu, our ancient concept of Ātma is as complex as Time and the Universe itself). So I wanted to write a quick reminder to everyone:
Here are some things that are HUMAN: limits, certainty, control, rules, exclusion, shame, judgment, fear, laws, bigotry, churches, temples, mosques, synagogues, religion, greed, cruelty, guidelines, dogma, rhetoric, traditions, attachment.
Things that are DIVINE: expansion, possibility, connection, joy, love, inclusion, trust, earth, space, healing, inspiration, wonder, release.
If it makes your world smaller and tighter, it's not divinity - it's humanity. When something makes your world and life expand, that's divinity. If it's definable and concrete, it's humanity. Divinity is the undefined, the abstract things, the unknowns that make most of us humans very, very uncomfortable.
Even religion, which claims a direct link to divinity (including the one I subscribe to) is ultimately our human attempt to lasso something bigger than ourselves into something consumable and concrete. With our attachment to tradition and rules, all too often, it means that the practice and so-called "laws" of religion are limited by the confines of the human mind.
Here's what's true: You are here, and therefore a part of what is Divine in this world, exactly as you are. There's light in each of us, and divinity comes from letting that light burst forth. Go. Be as big as you are called to be. Be exactly who you are, as you are. No human, no religion, no politician, no law...can change your worth. It's immutable, sacred, divine.
I love you all.
